
Brooke A. Farrar is an emerging English-American conductor and music educator currently serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Wind Conducting at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), at the Herb Alpert School of Music, where she persues a Master of Music in Wind Conducting under the mentorship of Dr. Travis Cross. In her assistantship role, she supports the instruction and administration of the “Solid Gold Sound” UCLA Marching Band under Dr. Justin McManus, and assists with logistical coordination and ensemble operations, and serves as a guest conductor for both the UCLA Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. Additionally, she serves as a conductor for the UCLA Brass Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Jens Lindemann.
A native to the East San Francisco Bay Area, Farrar has had the privilege of being inspired since an early age by the sounds of the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet, and Opera. Farrar lets her English heritage influence her love of Brass Band music to this day, advocating for performance and research of large brass and chamber ensembles. She has been an active conductor and performer in the greater Northern California area, performing as a utility brass consultant for both local and major ensembles including the Folsom Lake Symphony, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Diablo Wind Symphony. She played tuba, euphonium, bass trombone, before finding her passion in conducting.
Farrar earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an emphasis in brass pedagogy and performance from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. During her undergraduate studies, she founded the Pacific Brass Society, the institution’s only student-led large brass ensemble, where she served as Vice President and Artistic Director for two years.In her senior year, she was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Pacific Repertory Orchestra, where she introduced and conducted contemporary twentieth-century repertoire. Additionally, she founded the “Blue Bells Low Brass Quartet” composed of multi-instrumentalist performing on both trombones and euphoniums. In her spare time at the campus, she was the principal chair bass trombonist for the Pacific Heavy Ensemble, the Conservatory of Music’s premiere heavy metal orchestra.
Farrar is also actively involved with The Blue Devils Performing Arts, one of the nation’s premier youth performance organizations, and competitive Drum and Bugle Corps. Farrar has had the privilege of working with the organization’s different corps, both the ‘C’ Corps, for performers 7-15, and the ‘B’ Corps, ages 15-18. She has served as a low brass specialist with the ‘B’ Corps since 2023 and was named Brass Co-Caption Head of the ‘C’ Corps in 2024—becoming the first woman in the organization's history to hold a brass caption head position. She also actively performs as a trombone soloist for their Entertainment division.
Since 2019, Farrar has cultivated a diverse teaching and conducting portfolio across Northern and Central California, with experience in wind ensemble, marching band, jazz band, chamber orchestra, and pit orchestra settings. She is particularly skilled in visual and musical integration within the marching arts and has served as a music technician, choreographer, and ensemble coach for numerous competitive scholastic programs including Liberty High School, Foothill High School, and Los Gatos High School.
A committed advocate for equitable music education and inclusive leadership, Farrar is a proud alumna of Sigma Alpha Iota, a philanthropic music sorority with the initiative of women in music, continuing her work to foster community, mentorship, and opportunity for female-identifying people in music.
