Born in Hilo, Hawail in 1921, and the only boy with 3 sisters, "Jeff" grew up in Honolulu until he joined the Army late in WWII. After his return to San Francisco from Japan, he stayed and became a trolly-car driver, and he met and married Agnes "Joan" Weimer. They had a son, Jeff (BD Baritone, '73-'78) in 1956 and took a job at the Naval Air Station in Alameda as an Aircraft Powerplant mechanic. In 1960 the DeMello family moved to Pleasant Hill where Joan started working at the Paddock Bowl in Pacheco, and Jeff excelled in school at Gregory Gardens, Valley View, College Park HS, and DVC. Alfred drove the Blue Devils equipment truck in 1975, and retired from work in 1977, after Joan had a major stroke, then became her caregiver for the next 15 years. During the 80's Alfred joined the Board of Directors of the Blue Devils, as well as becoming one of the main volunteers for Blue Devils Bingo. He moved to Costa Mesa California in the early 2000's and passed away on Dec. 31, 2006. His family is deeply honored to have his name associated with the Blue Devils Scholarship program.
